South Yorkshire Police invest £2.8m to give more network
bandwidth to community safety applications
- Evolved Ethernet network from ntl:Telewest Business secures
faster response times
10th April 2006. South Yorkshire Police has teamed up with
ntl:Telewest Business to join a fast expanding band of UK police
forces investing in improving communications at a regional and
national level. The move will ensure that all officers and support
staff have high-speed access to networked applications that are
helping to increase the operational efficiency of the police force
and support community safety initiatives.
Seventy two sites across the region have been connected with
ntl:Telewest Business’ Evolved Ethernet, achieving a significant
upgrade to bandwidth available to individual sites from 2 Mbps to
10 Mbps circuits. The new network typology will also ensure
increased resiliency and support converged voice, data and video
traffic. Through deploying a high speed network, South Yorkshire
Police have the capability to deploy IP CCTV, videoconferencing and
VoIP in the future.
South Yorkshire Police is the 13th largest of the 43 police
forces in Great Britain and is responsible for policing an area
that covers an extensive 600 square miles. The new network will
give more than 3,300 police officers and 1,870 police staff fast
and efficient access to the Police National Computer network and
numerous local and national databases that are critical to ensuring
operations are conducted safely.
“South Yorkshire Police is committed to implementing new
initiatives that promote community safety at a local, regional and
national level, and a high-speed communications infrastructure
underpins a lot of these." said Kevin Battersby, Network Manager,
South Yorkshire Police. “As the general requirement for data in
police forces increases and the numbers of systems grow, the demand
for high availability bandwidth is critical. The network will give
us the most cost effective way of achieving this when compared to
other offerings on the market.”
Christopher Small, Director for Public Sector, ntl:Telewest
Business says, “With the Government’s drive for police forces
across the UK to embrace e-policing and make better use of
networked police information portals, a high-speed network becomes
critical. South Yorkshire Police is taking the lead in ensuring
that it has future-proofed its network today to make the most of
advances in policing tomorrow.”
Telewest Business’ Evolved Ethernet services, available from 10
Mbps up to 1 Gbps connection speeds to suit the bandwidth demands
of the applications in use, offer South Yorkshire Police an
extremely high-speed networking infrastructure with unparalleled
flexibility.
