facilities for healthcare students

Almost 300 staff and

e-journals

High speed network
will support simulation laboratories and functional clinical
environments planned for the future
ntl:Telewest Business, the supplier of communications
services to the public and private sectors, has joined forces with
the University of Bedfordshire to enhance the learning experience
of healthcare students at Butterfield Park, a new 85 acre
business and technology zone providing dedicated state-of-the-art
teaching and learning facilities.
Until recently, many of the University of
Bedfordshire’s healthcare courses were delivered at hospital sites
across the area, including Stoke Mandeville, Wycombe General, Luton
& Dunstable and Bedford hospitals. However, the
University decided to invest £700,000 in a fully networked building
at Butterfield Park so that teachers and pupils had access to
future developments such as simulation laboratories, including
fully functional theatres, wards, and clinic environments. As well
as providing students with the opportunity to develop and refine
their clinical skills, the new medical facility enables access to
computer suites, a digital library containing 2,000 e-journals, and
the NHS Trust Libraries.
To ensure that the centre had sufficient bandwidth to
support the planned simulation facilities and resources,
ntl:Telewest Business extended the University’s existing EtherVPN
infrastructure and deployed a 1Gb EtherVPN connection to the new
location. The links across the University’s other sites were also
upgraded to facilitate the fast and effective transfer of
media-rich data files, voice and video traffic.
Students based at Luton & Dunstable and Bedford
Hospitals moved in to the new campus earlier this year.
David Outram, Data Network Manager at the
University of Bedfordshire said: “To support the resources
required for e-learning we needed a resilient, reliable, high speed
network link, over which the media-rich applications could run.
When it came to enhancing our Ethernet connections, ntl:Telewest
Business was the only supplier capable of delivering the speeds and
solution we were looking for. Now our staff and students can
securely access the University network from all our remote
locations.”
John Cunningham, Director of Business Markets,
ntl:Telewest Business, said: “The University of Bedfordshire’s new
campus is a prime example of how state-of-the-art technology
can be utilised to equip students with the knowledge and expertise
required to take them forward into the practical world of
healthcare. Using advanced technology, the University can now
simulate all the conditions of a hospital so that students can
apply the medical knowledge they learn in the lecture theatres to
practical situations.”
